Position: Executive Director, part-time/20 hours per week

Accountable to:  Board of Directors

Compensation: Based on experience, opportunity for future increase in salary/hours

The Organization: The School Garden Network of Sonoma County (SGN), is the local hub for school garden activities, directly supporting garden and nutrition-based learning programs in elementary through high schools throughout Sonoma County. As a mostly volunteer non-profit formed in 2003, SGN has awarded more than $100,000 and provided mentoring, resources and professional development impacting thousands of students through garden-based learning and nutrition programs.  SGN’S mission fosters the creation and improvement of outdoor classrooms, which offer hands-on experiences across multiple subject areas including healthy eating, environmental awareness, and natural sciences, as well as opportunities for life-changing moments for children and the school community.

The Opportunity:  We are seeking an energetic, passionate person with professional leadership experience to inspire and manage the School Garden Network of Sonoma County. The Executive Director will be fully committed to SGN’s mission, and work effectively with an active Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to fulfill SGN’s unique role in the local garden-based learning community.

Responsibilities will include:

Leadership & Management

  1. Inspire and support a strong Board of Directors (BOD)
  2. Inspire and support current working committees, including recruitment of new members
  3. Oversee day-to-day operations of SGN, motivating and managing SGN staff, BOD, and volunteers
  4. Work with BOD to develop and implement strategic plan, recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve goals
  5. Ensure effective systems to track, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the BOD, funders, and other constituents

Fundraising & Accounting

  1. Work with BOD to refine fundraising plan, develop materials, and set fundraising goals
  2. Expand fundraising activities to support existing program operations and any new programs
  3. Meet with former donors and cultivate new donor relationships
  4. Research and secure long-term funding for sustaining SGN programs,
  5. Form new partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations with related organizations to leverage resources
  6. Develop and manage annual budgets, ensure consistent quality of finances, administration, and legal responsibilities


  1. Serve as the public face of SGN at meetings, conferences, public relations and fundraising events
  2. Report to the BOD on a regular basis, act as a liaison between the board and the rest of the organization
  3. Cultivate and maintain relationships with other non-profit organizations, businesses, and government agencies
  4. Update and refine all aspects of communication strategy – materials, events, website/forum, etc.
  5. Serve as advocate for the school garden community at relevant meetings/events, and coach BOD to do the same

Additional responsibilities may include:

Develop and lead continuing education workshops, garden tours and annual symposiums


The successful candidate will have a combination of education, volunteer and paid work experience that demonstrates

  • At least 2 years of management experience with the ability to inspire and coach BOD, staff, and volunteers
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate Board member relationships
  • Proven fundraising experience
  • Strong marketing, outreach and public relations skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be efficient and self-directed, as well as work collaboratively with a team
